Fellow FFA Alumni,

As President I felt it necessary to provide you an update on the activities at a national level. As most of you know November 14, 2011 Frank Saldana moved within the organization to a Local Program Support (LPS) position covering the South East. Since then Tony Small, Partner Services Division Director has been the interim Director. I have been in steady contact with Tony and the National FFA Alumni staff to ensure the voice of the FFA Alumni membership is present during the audit of current association programs. Many of you ask, what is the timeline to hire a new Executive Director? Believe me I can’t wait! However, the end of November your executive committee asked FFA to hold off on the solicitation to allow further review of the job description. Today, I am pleased to announce, that January 25th we began interviews.

During the last 3 months it has become apparent that several of our current programs have not been assessed or updated since 1971. I am not saying that it is all bad; however to run like a well-oiled machine you must have regular tune-ups, it gave us the opportunity to revisit several things and ask questions. For instance with our two main goals.
1. To have an active fully engaged FFA Alumni affiliate associated with every FFA chapter, and
2. To be the leaders in advocacy for agricultural education.
Is our Vision Statement still current? Also, looking at operation budgets and cost of doing business, should we look at rebates and newsletter expense? Are our Awards relevant? Should National FFA Alumni be providing Scholarships? Or is it our role to have in place programs and materials to help each of you provide for and support your Local and State programs? And how do we answer the question: “Why do I pay National Dues?” I would appreciate your feedback and thoughts on these!

Recently, your staff and council spent three long days working on critical items. We had the opportunity to learn and grow through presentations, brainstorming sessions, updates and reports; we created committees with attainable goals, objectives and timelines; had productive conversations and left exhausted! I feel great pride in the work the council and staff did and believe each FFA Alumni member has a voice and is being represented by people at the table. After our meeting I left feeling confident we will make great strides toward achieving our long range goals, please join me in thanking your National FFA Alumni Council for their service.

Also, we were given an opportunity to have a better understanding of our Agricultural Career Network (AgCN) FFA Alumni portals, our new membership/roster system. We are excited about the potential these will bring but unfortunately they will be delayed until summer 2012. I know you are anxious to move to an electronic system but I’m so nostalgic for our excel rosters that we can’t let them go this year. So if you would join me one last time in filling out and sending in those wonderful excel rosters we can celebrate both their retirement and mine at National FFA Alumni convention this October in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I hope to see all of you in Bozeman Montana for our FFA Alumni Development Conference, July 11-14, 2012. Staff is working on action packed workshops and plenty of sightseeing trips, including a day trip to Yellow Stone National Park. My hope is to have several things in place to talk about, gaining thoughts and insight from each and every one of you in attendance.

In closing, I would like to thank each of you for what you do as a volunteer for this wonderful organization daily! If you are raising money for your local chapter, providing assistance to your local instructor, mentoring students, or fighting to save a program within your school district, your passion and dedication to Agricultural Education and FFA is apparent. I strive every day to strengthen every FFA Alumni affiliate in every community along with having programs in place allowing community members, businesses, administrators and anyone with a voice to understand the importance of our great organization… so we can be a united force for Agricultural Education and FFA!

National FFA Alumni Council Re-Energizing Meeting

After a long and jam-packed weekend of hard nosed work with the National FFA Alumni Council, Andrea Stevenson of Christmas Florida, reflects on how she re-energizes her passion for FFA every time she can.

"I realize I talk alot bout the FFA and this weekend is just one of the reasons why. Tomorrow I am going to Dade City to stay with some friends that I met when I was an FFA member 20 years ago and in addition I get to see another friend that I met in 7th grade at Forestry Camp. After all these years we still stay in touch. It's one of the many reasons why I am so passionate about FFA!"

Your National FFA Alumni Council worked hard from dusk-till-dawn January 19-21. Their work will propel the National FFA Alumni Association in a direction that will help achieve the two long range goals:
1. Every FFA chapter has an active and engaged FFA Alumni affiliate
2. Become the leaders in advocacy for agricultural education
And create an environment where the national association can impact more students and recruit more FFA Alumni members.
The energy was high and at times so was the tension... but this is what happens when you have passionate people working passionately to save, strengthen and sustain FFA and agriculture education.

Idaho FFA Alumni is Engaged!

Watch out! The Idaho FFA Alumni are fired up and readying themselves to take on the world. They just wrapped up an intense weekend of strategizing, planning and goal setting to revitalize their state Alumni Association and to grow the number of FFA supporters in the great state of Idaho.

Four Oregon FFA Alumni Council members traveled to snowy McCall, Idaho to join the Idahoans for the weekend. Armed with great food, plenty of coffee, M&M’s, white board and markers, they shared their experiences and helped facilitate Idaho’s development of a vision statement, mission and short and long-term goals. And it was the help of the National FFA Alumni’s State-to-State Mentorship Grant that made this weekend of planning possible. It was an amazing experience and I’m thankful I was allowed the opportunity to lend a hand.

Chuck Radloff, Idaho Alumni Council President said in an email to all that participated “I think we made some tremendous strides forward in developing a sustainable and stable state FFA Alumni Association for Idaho. The sharing of your experiences and insights will be priceless to us as we grow and expand our services.”

Well said Chuck! And the feeling is mutual. The passion, enthusiasm and dedication of all that participated were infectious and everyone that participated went away with something. Whether it was how to organize, getting new ideas for fundraising, improving relationships with our FFA partners or renewing our commitment to the FFA Alumni, FFA and agriculture – everyone grew from being a part of this event.

Thank you National FFA Alumni for the State-to-State Mentorship Grant and for providing the seed to make this opportunity to engage blossom!

Oregon FFA Alumni Council Cooks Up Support for Ag Advisors

There are hundreds of ways to show people you care about them and appreciate what they do. And like so many FFA Alumni, we do a lot of cooking to show how much we care. This time it was the Oregon FFA Alumni Council cooking for our ag teachers!

Strengthening ties and supporting ag advisors is a key component of the Oregon FFA Alumni’s mission:
“Ensure the future of agricultural, career and technical education through the support of students and advisors.”

This priority was affirmed when the Oregon Alumni Council members provided the main dinner for almost 100 Oregon ag advisors at their annual Summer Conference.

Oregon’s Council members have consciously put time and energy into maintaining a strong working relationship with the ag teachers in our great state. And it has paid off tremendously. The relationships and connections we are building are strong. Those ag programs that do not enjoy the benefits of having an Alumni are seeing first-hand how the programs with strong Alumni relationships are thriving. As they say “a picture (or real-life example) is worth a 1,000 words!”

For fun, the Council members challenged themselves to a pork rib cook-off. The judges – all the ag teachers – voted for the best ribs, not knowing who cooked what! It was close but, President-Elect Rod Cockeram’s secret sauce beat out President Neal Lucht’s private recipe. We had a little extra fun, sneaking in an entry of cold turkey dogs on behalf of Past President Mr. Bob Barton adding plenty of laughter to the evening.

It is a joy to spend time with the hardworking ag teachers and do what we can to ease their burden.

How has FFA Impacted my Life?

Wow. What a loaded question!

Let me tell you a story about a shy girl who never really fit in. She joined FFA as an eighth grader because her dad was an FFA alumni. In her 9th grade journal she wrote "I need to find something that I'm passionate about. I need to find my purpose in life." Pretty weighty words for a 14-year-old!

When this girl was a sophomore in high school, she attended the National FFA Convention. It was a life-changing experience. Almost overnight the shy girl who didn't fit in had come out of her shell. She spearheaded a membership drive that doubled her chapter's membership in her junior year. She battled against the school board because of possible cuts to the Agriculture Education program in her senior year. She ran for state office (and was the runner-up!). She earned her State and American FFA degrees.
She went to college and double majored and threw herself into completely into her passion-- agriculture. She held leadership positions, she excelled, made friends and made a name for herself in her state's agriculture industry. She served as an industry role model for high school students, she worked for high-profile farmers, she did nearly everything that she aimed her sights on. This girl, who had moved off the farm early in her life, traveled over the United States and Canada to learn about her passions.

Today, this girl owns and operates a farm with her husband and son, as well as working with youth in FFA and another well-known youth organization, 4-H.
Much of what this girl has done was made possible by the experiences and skills that she had and honed through her involvement in FFA.

FFA and FFA Alumni Changing Lives, Shout Out from a Proud Parent

I am an FFA mom who is now a grandmother. All 3 of my sons Will, Aaron and Matt were in FFA at Robertson High School in Las Vegas New Mexico. After our sons graduated and left home they all married lovely country girls, 2 of which were also in FFA. One of the daughters is still active in coaching the forestry team.

My husband and I wanted to continue to support FFA so in 1997 we organized the "The Rociada Buyers Club" in order to purchase animals at our local county fair sale. Any animal we purchase is then donated to the Robertson FFA who then in turn have the meat processed and raffled off as a fund raiser. That money is then used for their trip to Nationals.

In June of 2010 our 100 year old barn was restored to better condition than it had been in all its existence! Thanks to the National FFA Alumni, three FFA chapters from Michigan, Wisconsin and New Mexico along with Campbell’s Soup Company and Valspar Paint Company, who made it all possible. I entered our Upper Peninsula of Michigan barn in a contest sponsored by Campbell’s Soup and FFA Alumni and the ten final barns were placed on line to be voted on by the whole world. Five were chosen to be renovated and ours was one of the five! Five FFA students from New Mexico, along with students from Michigan and Wisconsin along with family and friends all traveled to Bark River, Michigan to help restore our beloved barn. And you should see it now! I can't thank FFA enough for making a life long dream of preserving our barn come true. Steve Olson, Candidate for FFA Alumni President Talks Advocacy

National FFA Alumni Priority #2: Become leaders in advocacy for ag education and FFA
A few months ago while waiting for my son, I started talking with another dad. The conversation led to our jobs. As is often the case, he was not familiar with the work of farm organizations or trade associations. I explained to him that I promote poultry farming to consumers, coordinate research, and lobby on behalf of Minnesota’s poultry farmers, processors and the associated suppliers. His comment was, “Oh, so you’re a politician!” Not surprisingly, that is a common reaction. I realized shortly after I started working in public policy that every person and every career has a “special interest” group advocating on its behalf. There is even an association for associations!

Last month I talked about the first of the alumni’s priorities – an affiliate for every chapter. The second priority is for the FFA Alumni to become leaders in advocacy for ag education and FFA. FFA Alumni are community members and in the best position to advocate at the local, state and national level. Advocacy is as easy as two steps: first, develop a relationship with your educational policy makers (curriculum director, administrators, and school board members) as well as state and federal elected officials; second, tell your story of why, and how, you support agricultural education and the FFA.

Develop a relationship, preferably before a budget crisis, with key people. Identify topics where you share values such as interest in helping students succeed and strengthening curriculum. This establishes you as an interested and credible resource. In a crisis, bring solutions, not just complaints. Elected officials value input from a trusted source to help them understand the issues and make informed decisions. Be upfront with the positive and negative sides of your solution. This prepares them to handle questions from opposing views.

In the opening paragraph I mentioned that everyone is represented by a “special interest” group. However, the most effective method to convey a message is by “telling your story” directly. Relating your personal experience as a supporter of ag education and FFA can have the greatest influence on decision makers.

The FFA Alumni continues to grow as an organization. To strengthen and expand FFA and ag education, FFA Alumni need to become the leader in advocating at the local, state, and national level. I have the experience and skills to assist the National FFA Alumni Association in becoming that leader and providing guidance and advocacy support for local and state affiliates. Anita Schneider, Candidate for National FFA Alumni President has Strength and Passion for FFA

Three years ago when I was running for the National FFA Alumni Council I used puzzle pieces as my campaign gimmick. Just like each piece of a puzzle is unique--as are each of us, we all have many facets, we all have special talents and we all fit somewhere. Each piece has a vital role in helping achieve the finished product, for without all the pieces you will never see the big picture, so you have to keep searching and looking for the pieces that fit. I believe this to be true and I keep searching for those talents.

I believe that I have brought pieces of myself to the picture of the National Council. Some of the things I bring would be motivation, willingness, organizational skills, ideas, passion, doing what needs to be done, communication skills, participation, and love for the organization and for what it stands for. I may not be the first to make a decision but I always put a lot of thought into my decisions, willingness to listen to both sides and try to make the decision that would best benefit the group as a whole. I believe that having the ability to communicate with people from all walks of life is important when it comes to advocacy which is one of the main goals of the National FFA Alumni Association. I do believe in the future of agriculture with a faith born not of words but of deeds, and doing what needs to be done to get the job completed in an organized and timely manner is a skill that I feel I do possess.

I have been a supporter of the FFA organization for the better part of my life and understand the importance of the agricultural field and how it must continue to grow. A main strategic goal of the Alumni is to have an active Alumni affiliate for each FFA Chapter and I have helped to organize FFA Alumni affiliates to help the organization grow and continue to work for the betterment of FFA and agricultural education.

Presidential Candidate Anita Schneider Putting her Passion for FFA and Ag Education into Action!

I believe in the future of agriculture with the faith born not of words but of deeds. FFA just isn’t about farmers anymore; educating our young people about agriculture is very important because they are our future leaders. These young people will have to be the ones who will feed and clothe the ever growing population. As our society learns to prolong life, the agricultural world will have to learn new methods of sustaining these lives. They need to be aware of the number of opportunities that agriculture offers to them. But education of these young people is just a part of my advocacy for agriculture.

Farmers and agriculture are essential in our food system, without farmers we would all starve. There are very few foods produced on farms that are immediately edible. Food processing is required to turn farm produce into food to feed our families. We rarely stop and think about how many people it takes to make meals appear on tables. One can see how many lives agriculture affects. We need to educate the urban world as to where their food, clothes, homes and even the paper they write on comes from. What I do know is that there are stereotypes that exist about both groups that sometimes keep us from reaching out and finding true understanding. Almost all food processing in the developed world is done at an industrial scale. The supermarkets where we buy most of our food, purchases their supplies directly or indirectly from other companies, these companies buy their ingredients from other companies and so on until someone pays the farmer for the produce to feed the cycle. If we could take every part of agriculture out of a person’s life what would be left—if you think about it – not much.

We also need to keep the leaders of our country educated about how much it takes to produce these agricultural items and encourage them to keep providing funding for the education of agriculture, as well as, the farm programs to the farmers who provide these products. Every person is touched by agriculture in everything they live in, clothes they wear, paper they write on and even the milk they pour on their whole grain cereal in the morning. We also need to keep in mind the number of jobs that the agricultural world provides. After all, where would this world be without agriculture?

Presidential Candidate Steve Olson, Every FFA Chapter needs a FFA Alumni Affiliate

In 2010, the National FFA Alumni established two priorities for our role in supporting FFA and Ag Education: the first is for every FFA to have an active FFA Alumni affiliate; the second is becoming the leader in advocacy for FFA and Ag Education. This blog will focus on my thoughts for the first priority with the second priority being discussed in an October blog.

A key to the long term success of local ag education programs is community support. The support is built upon meeting the needs of students and the community in the short-term. The best way for ag education to compete for support and resources during tight budgets is to provide a high quality program that meets national curriculum standards. A high quality program provides students with classroom instruction, AND experiential learning (through Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)), AND leadership development (FFA). A major strength of agricultural education is applying lessons learned in the classroom to practical situations this enables students to learn on a deeper level.

Personally I believe that every school should have an ag education program. The first step is to strengthen the community support of existing programs. FFA Alumni is in a unique position to reinforce the ag education network by identifying and working with community leaders in neighboring ag ed programs to form alumni affiliates. The role of the National FFA Alumni organization is to provide training and resources to assist local affiliates in working with neighboring programs. State alumni associations are key to working with state ag education and FFA staff to identify programs that may have a more urgent need to build community support. A second phase is for local and state FFA Alumni to look at establishing ag education programs in schools where none currently exist.

Take Home Message:
1. Work with ag educator(s) in a neighboring community to identify a core group (3-10) of supporters to initiate the formation of an alumni affiliate.
2. Access material and resources from state and national FFA Alumni to assist in forming a new affiliate.
3. Serve as mentor for the new affiliate.
4. Establishing new agricultural education programs - Develop a list of neighboring schools and potential supporters (ag/commodity group members, business owners, community leaders etc).

Why do you want to be a member of the National FFA Alumni Council? I love the passion that Alumni members have for the FFA and helping kids in general. They are the "Poster Child" for volunteerism. FFA and Ag Ed becomes a part of us in such a way that we live it everyday. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to serve with such caring individuals that are determined to achieve the Alumni's goals, like myself.

Why are you so passionate about FFA and Ag Education? I have seen how both aspects can affect a child's life in a postive manner and shape their future. As a former member, the impact that FFA/Ag Ed and my Advisors had upon me was tremendous. I am confident that they helped make me the person I am today.
Agriculture is the foundation of the world. As a society, we need to continously provide leaders that can represent the industry intelligently while being diversified. The FFA, Alumni and Ag Ed have the opportunity to do just that.

What can you bring to the council? Lots of enthusiasm, experience, pride and dedication to anything I am involved with.

Why do you want to be a member of the National FFA Alumni Council?
I am striving to become a member of the National FFA Alumni Council for several reasons. The most significant reason being my passion for the agriculture industry and its upcoming development. I believe strongly in FFA alumni’s stake in the future of the agriculture and agricultural education and feel that we, the FFA alumni team, can grow successfully together with other organizations to diversely cultivate agriculture.

Why are you so passionate about FFA and Ag Education?
FFA and Ag Education are two entities that positively affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, students and supporters each and every day. The experiences that these organizations provide are those that will remain with that person throughout their entire FFA career, alumni career and personal life. I feel that as an alumni our goal, whether it’s written down or not, should be to constantly advocate and educate the general public on the importance of agriculture, agriculture education and FFA. If we strive to do this, our country, our communities and our children will all be accustomed to a very healthy, fair and prosperous way of life centered around faith, family and freedom.

What can you bring to the council?
The National FFA Alumni Council is a group of fun, diverse individuals who share a passion for all of agriculture. As a member of this team, I feel that I can bring energy, enthusiasm and ethics to help keep the diversity of personalities, values and skills in the organization. My extensive, lifelong dedication to agriculture and FFA will also shine through in my ability to help other affiliates, colleagues and friends strive to build their alumni into a strong advocacy group for the industry and its supporting societies.

Favorites
National FFA Alumni Convention or Alumni Development Conference moment:
To state a favorite moment from either of these events is simply difficult to do. My favorite moment is meeting new and exciting individuals for the first time and developing these relationships into lifelong friendships at these events. I am simply amazed every time I attend these conferences at how many good hearted people there are involved with our organization.

Richard Daniel is running for the National FFA Alumni Council. Get to know Richard a little more before casting your vote at the National FFA Alumni convention this October in Indianapolis, Ind.

Why do you want to be a member of the National FFA Alumni Council?
I want to do all I can to make sure National Alumni reaches its goal of having an FFA alumni affiliate for every FFA chapter nationwide. I really believe achieving this goal will most directly impact the greatest number of FFA members. I also want to create a fun and enjoyable environment for the FFA Alumni to ensure we retain our current members and draw in new ones, young and old! For me personally, I want to continue to expand my connection with the outstanding people involved with Alumni.

Why are you so passionate about FFA and Ag Education?
FFA has made me the person, father, husband and leader that I am today. My own FFA experience gave me the work ethic and confidence to provide for my family, build my lawn maintenance business and take on my community leadership roles. I see this same positive impact on FFA members over and over again. Whether a student is shy or already very outgoing there is a place for them in an Ag program. What’s made me the most passionate though, has been how FFA has benefited my own children. Each of my three girls has been extremely successful in college and in their own community endeavors, in a big part, because of the leadership and life skills they gained in the FFA. I am so proud of them and want to make sure our FFA programs will be available for the next generation.

What can you bring to the Council?
I will bring a down-to-earth, common sense approach to the Council with my local alumni experiences: helping start our local affiliate, stepping up as president, recruiting new members, helping neighboring affiliates get started, cooking for FFA events and fundraisers, raffling items at the Farm Show and fair, helping students prepare for contests, chaperoning, building relationships with local business like Tractor Supply, and so on. I personally know what it takes to make a local alumni work well, and I have learned what creates challenges. I will bring my practical knowledge to the National Council and offer ideas on what the Council can do to help state and local affiliates successfully meet their own goals. From my perspective, the number one job of the National Council is to provide guidance and resources for state and local affiliates so they can help their own Ag Ed programs and FFA members.

- Hanging over the edge of a cliff in Ouray, Colorado while on a Jeep ride in 2009. (This stirred up a much different reaction!)

Why do you want to be a member of the National FFA Alumni Council?
Being a former FFA member and a member of the Georgia FFA Alumni Council, I have been extremely involved and I know how much I gained and learned. I want to share what I have learned and previous experiences to ensure that the National FFA Alumni Association continues to progress and grow.

Why are you so passionate about FFA and Ag Education?
Agriculture has always had a part in my life. Upon entering high school, the first class that I wanted to sign up for was agricultural education. I have gained more from FFA and the FFA Alumni about leadership and communication skills than any other organization or class. I am currently studying agricultural education at the University of Georgia and plan on teaching within the next two years.

What can you bring to the council?
I can bring a younger approach to the council. Still technically being both an FFA and an FFA Alumni member, I will be able to provide insight as to the current states of both entities, and most importantly, what members want and need.

Why do I want to be a member of the National FFA Alumni Council?
I suppose that is for the big pay check you get every 2 weeks!!! As the kids would say “NOT”! Now to be a little more serious, Agricultural, Food and Natural Resources education is a very successful program. However, there is always room for improvement. I believe that the National FFA Alumni Council can and will provide the needed leadership to empower legions of volunteers across this great Nation to help local teachers to be even more successful. As a National FFA Alumni Council member I would lend my experience, thoughts and ideas to achieve the promise of agricultural education/FFA.

Why am I so passionate about FFA and Ag Education?
I believe Agricultural Education/FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students. I believe the Agricultural Education/FFA program is the most effective instructional program in the school and addresses many of the educational issues such as student engagement. I have seen agricultural educators work with highly motivated students as well as some who were not so motivated. The likelihood for student success is high in the agricultural education programs because teachers are able to use many tools (one important one is the use of FFA Alumni volunteers) to address learning styles, interests and needs to engage the students in learning. The FFA is an important component in the process. It provides recognition for worthy achievement as well providing incentives for achieving more than the student ever thought possible. How could one not be passionate about a program that has done so much for so many young people?

What can I bring to the Council?
I would bring nearly 45 years of proven leadership and experience in agricultural education along with recent experience of working as an active member of the local Spotsylvania FFA Alumni Chapter. I started my career in January 1966 as a local agricultural education teacher and moved into local school administration. I was recruited to the Missouri State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education where I became the State Director of Agricultural Education/FFA Advisor. In 1984, I was appointed to the US Department of Education as a Senior Program Specialist-Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education and National FFA Advisor /Chairman of the FFA Board of Directors/CEO. I retired on December 31, 2010. I have experience in how leadership groups work effectively and a passion for helping students and the agricultural education profession to be successful.

My Favorites—

National FFA Convention--the 83th Convention. It was my last convention as the National FFA Advisor. I had a great time and I only messed up 1 time in the opening ceremony!

National FFA Alumni development conference--I do not remember the year but it was the boat ride in Oregon where not one boat rider came out dry! What a blast!

Florida FFA Alumni and Supporters Leadership Development Conference

This August, we joined the Florida FFA Alumni leaders at the Leadership Camp run by the FFA near Haines City, FL. Like always, it was better than a family reunion!

Each affiliate was recognized, as were the officers and the FFA state officers. We were reminded of who we are as FFA Alumni and our purpose. We were reminded of Florida’s FFA Alumni mission and motto. State Alumni president, Doug Register reminded us of who we are, what we do, and who can be members. (It is good to keep reminded of who we are and what we represent.)

The new state FFA Advisor, Amy McAllister was introduced to us. She is an energetic young woman who is up to the task ahead of her. It is so good to see younger people at Alumni functions. Another young teacher/advisor, Farrah Johnson, and the president of her local alumni, Tony Thigpen, presented both sides of the FFA/FFA Alumni coin. They were a prime example of how the two organizations work together.

We were excited to have Amber Smyer from the national staff with us for the weekend. She enlightened us on national FFA Alumni goals, and introduced the “Connect Program”. She also introduced the Ag Career Network to us. Great things are coming down the pike for FFA Alumni!

We learned a fun new ice breaker; each person was given a piece of candy and told NOT to eat it. We were then divided into groups according to the candy we had. The entire group had to discover three things everyone in the group had in common. They ranged from everyone loving Ag Education to no one in one group had ever been in jail. It was designed to show that everyone has something in common with everyone else if we will just take time to discover it.

An excellent presentation was given by former Ag teacher, Delbert Redditt, offering words of wisdom that to motivate, one must be great. It reminded us that as leaders we have to keep the membership motivated.

Dr. Jim Dyer, from the University of Florida, brought the Ag Ed message with some outstanding statistics.

Sorrel Fields spoke about the Florida Baptist Children’s Home and gave examples of how we as individuals can impact the children they serve using our agricultural knowledge.

Wow! What a jam packed weekend! So much to learn and too little time; sure am glad we have national convention to look forward to so we can learn even more about helping America’s future leaders in agriculture to be the best they can.

Steve Olson Running for National FFA Alumni Council President

Greetings! Anita Schneider and I are both completing our 3-year terms as Members-At-Large on the Council and are running for the President-Elect position. Using the blog is a great way for members to get to know those that are running for a position on the Council. Please also use this as an opportunity to contact me (steve@minnesotaturkey.com) with your thoughts and ideas on how the national alumni council can meet the needs of local and state alumni affiliates.

First and foremost I am a father and husband. Cindy and I have been married for 22 years. We have two sons: Ryan, 17 years old and a senior at Buffalo High School; and Eric, is a 13 year old 8th grader. Currently, and for the past 11 years, I serve as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association and three other poultry organizations. My responsibilities include advocating for poultry farmers, processors and allied industry to consumers; and on local, state, and federal public policy issues.

As alumni members our role is to support the FFA and agricultural education students and programs. We provide the human capitol, in the form of volunteers that assist the advisors and members in maintaining high quality ag education and FFA programs. As alumni we have a responsibility to provide stability and consistency to our local and state programs. The national council is a resource for local and state affiliates. I have enjoyed serving on the Council the past three years and would like to continue as President-Elect. I bring a big picture perspective that looks at how the FFA Alumni can position itself for short and long term sustainability.

I am involved in the Alumni because I believe in FFA’s ability to develop young people; the need for consumers to better understand agriculture’s role in society; and, selfishly, I experience personal and professional growth through my involvement.
A few of the activities I am most proud of are:
Establishing the Minnesota FFA Hall Fame – recognizing those individuals who've made significant contributions to agricultural education and FFA over an extended period of time.
FFA Leadership Center and Miracle of Birth Center at the MN State Fair – assisted in raising $1.5 million to construct a new facility which attracts 1 million visitors each year during the MN State Fair.
Currently I am serving on two planning committees in Minnesota.
1. FFA Policy Conference for members to learn more about advocating for agriculture, education, and the FFA.
2. Ag Industry Advisory Council to work with MN’s ag education program within the MN Dept of Education; and streamline corporate support of ag education and FFA across state lines.

Anita Schneider Running for National FFA Alumni President

Becoming president of the National FFA Alumni has been a dream of mine for some years. After attending my first National FFA convention years ago and seeing the great wave of blue jackets I knew I wanted to be a part of this great organization. The passion and commitment the members have for the FFA organization is so overwhelming that it gets you so excited to become the best you can be. From the very beginning the FFA Alumni have welcomed me with open arms and encouraged me to become involved. The Alumni is a great support group for these young FFA members and I want to become a stronger advocate for Agricultural Education.

I have been a member of our local FFA Alumni affiliate since 1994. Watching these young men and women grow has been very rewarding and I would like to think that I had a hand in it. Going from the local to state level seemed to be a logical step in that I have become a more active advocate for the Ag Ed program. However there is always a need to keep the line of communication and support open with the local levels. The next growing step for me was when I decided to try to become a member of the National Council and was elected as the Member-at-Large. The past 3 years have been a definite learning process for me. Being involved with the National Council has opened many doors for me, helping me to expand my knowledge, gain confidence and encourages me to give presentations and become a better advocate for Agriculture. I would like to continue my quest and fulfill a dream and become the president of the National council. There are visions that I have to assist with the growth of the council and aid with the continuing line of communication to all levels of Alumni.

Favorite things:
My favorite moments would have to be a couple;
1-was my very first time at National Convention and attending my first opening session and seeing the excitement in these young people.
2-when I won the Outstanding Achievement Award—I just do what needs to be done and it was so cool to know that someone was paying attention and I was recognized for just being me.

Favorite food would not be what you eat but who you eat it with-- a good home cooked meal while being surrounded by friends and family.

Favorite movie—don’t really have one—I like romantic comedies that make me laugh and possibly draw an occasional tear.

Favorite song—I like most kinds of music; soft classical while reading a good book, country to listen to while working, and Christian music to play & sing.

Indiana FFA Alumni Association's on the Rise

The Indiana FFA Alumni reestablishment is something that has been sought after for some time now. There has always been multiple levels within FFA and FFA Alumni no matter where you go. Indiana FFA has had a strong state association for many years but has lacked in the much needed support that Alumni can offer. This raises some issues and gives way to many disconnects. The FFA Organization as a whole is known for developing strong leadership characteristics in today’s youth, without a State FFA Alumni Association many of these youth become disconnected with the organization that they love. By reestablishing the Indiana FFA Alumni Association, we now providing that link for FFA members to continue in an organization that is so close to their hearts and provide an avenue for them to give back as well.

Indiana FFA Alumni is not only there for the former FFA members, but also to support the current FFA programs across the state. This association is dedicated to providing support for Indiana FFA and Agricultural Education through advocacy, financial support, volunteerism, and communication. We hope to expand FFA Alumni throughout the state and charter many more local affiliates. By having this state association we will bridge the gap between the national and local level and provide the resources and assistance needed to charter FFA Alumni affiliates within Indiana.

Reconnect to Build a Better Future for FFA and Ag Education

This year’s Alumni Development Conference in Little Rock Arkansas reenergized alumni members across the country. In addition to the tours, speakers, and fellowship there was a strong vision presented for the future of alumni nationwide. The FFA Re-Connect Campaign, which is currently being initiated by the National FFA Foundation and National FFA Alumni, will strive to rebuild relationships with the estimated eight million former FFA members currently living in the United States.

It is crucial to the future of the organization that we effectively reengage as many people as possible to advocate and support each of the 523,000 FFA members. The reconnect campaign will focus on connecting with individuals at large scale events. These events may include the NFR Cowboy Christmas, National FFA Convention, and many others. This is only one element to the campaign and we ask for your help in this endeavor. It is crucial that each of us who believes in this organization attempt to reconnect as many people as possible in our home communities to the National FFA Alumni. ADC 2011 concludes in Little Rock on a high note

There were smiles, laughs and, yes, even a few tears before the National FFA Alumni Association's Alumni Development Conference Banquet ended Saturday night -- all courtesy of terrific testimonials telling perfectly why the work of FFA's most vocal and deliberate backers was so important.

The conference, hosted in Little Rock, Ark., this year, was chock full of learning moments, motivating lessons and -- as with any FFA-related event -- plenty of good networking. Hosted by the Arkansas FFA Alumni with big support from the Arkansas FFA, ADC showcased many of Arkansas' agricultural high points in between teaching the attending conference participants from 30 states some critical points of advocacy.

Saturday night's banquet -- one with a special touch due to the National FFA Alumni celebrating it's 40th-anniversary in 2011 -- reinforced all of those aspects. Testimonials told of how the venerable 84-year-old FFA is still manufacturing members with a head start in their knowledge of the agriculture industry and another leap ahead in their leadership abilities. A few eyes in the room were a little misty when FFA Alumni members from Oregon, Michigan and other states told how their individual affiliate had literally saved FFA from disappearing in their communities.

The banquet included remarks from Marion Fletcher [National FFA treasurer & Arkansas state supervisor/program manager of agricultural education (including FFA)] and Frank Saldaña (National FFA Alumni executive director). Additionally, Ryan Gallagher with the National FFA Foundation spoke of a continued dedication to FFA Alumni programs from the FFA fundraising arm. Several important guests from Arkansas agriculture attended to share in the celebration of the conference sponsored by Tractor Supply Co., and Farm Credit.

To close the evening, Saldaña revealed the site of the 2012 Alumni Development Conference would move west next July to Montana. Dates and a specific city the conference will be released at a later date.

Next up for the National FFA Alumni Association is the 2011 National FFA Alumni Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The 40th anniversary convention is held alongside the National FFA Convention Oct. 19-21, 2011 and will feature a concert from country music artist Joe Diffie. We're close to wrapping up another great edition of the National FFA Alumni Association's Alumni Development Conference, and to say the participants have enjoyed the experience is an understatement. There have been workshops, learning labs, educational tours and activity after activity that leads to great networking.

One conference participant wanted to share a bit about her experience so far here in Little Rock:

"When you get the opportunity to attend an FFA Alumni Development Conference you should attend! Take the time out of your busy schedule to be with caring people from around our great county to network and share ideas on how to grow your Alumni. Mark Mayfield challenges ADC participants to do more in opening session

The 2011 National FFA Alumni Development Conference opened Wednesday night in Little Rock with "Taste of States", an event for conference participants to show off our state's best-tasting products. While there, Mark Mayfield -- a fellow Kansan -- approached me to talk about our shared home state. In our conversation he asked me where in Kansas I was from (WaKeeney) and he asked if I knew Dennis Deines. It turns our Mark & Dennis had worked together in FFA when he was in high school. Proving the world is indeed small, I knew Dennis as he lived just miles from my house!

It turns out Mark was a substitute speaker for our morning session on Thursday. Mark was an FFA member, is an FFA Alumni member, served on the foundation board, his mother was a former Kansas State Alumni president and he very much believes that FFA has helped him be the man he is today.

I am really glad that Mark was our opening session keynote speaker Thursday morning at ADC -- he was simply awesome. He made us laugh and kept us on the edge of our seats. He taught us things about ourselves and how to communicate with others—mainly that we need to “Do unto others as they want to be done unto”. We need to remember to emulate and mirror the person that we are communicating with—we need to move into THEIR comfort zone. You must have an intellectual acceptance, but a gut resistance to change because humans are creatures of habit. I could have listened to him for hours—he had a very creative and inspirational speaker. What a great way to start off our week in Little Rock!

How my Father's Influence, Influenced Me!

I’m a lifetime FFA Alumni member for a number of reasons: because I was a former FFA member, because I’m passionate about agriculture and agricultural education, and because I want others to have the same opportunities I did as a student.

However, today my passion as an advocate, developer, promoter and recruiter for FFA Alumni is deeper because I've seen first hand the gratitude from countless parents and students toward my father, Gaylen Smyer, for his influence, guidance and leadership as an agricultural educator over twenty years. His career impacted my own experience with FFA and shaped why I am a believer in the power of FFA Alumni.

It was my father’s example that led me to the realization that FFA and agricultural education can change an individual student’s life, but FFA Alumni has the ability to shape a community. Many times I’d return to Idaho to visit my family and often run into people who know my father. Not unusual in a small community, but what left an impression was their deeply sincere comments of appreciation (often with tears in their eyes) for the impact he had in their child's life as they went through the agricultural education program. I’ve heard the testimonials from former students who can pinpoint their celebrated business, civic engagement, educational accomplishment or community contribution as a direct result of what they learned as an Ag Ed student and FFA member. As FFA Alumni, I believe we play an equally important role as the teacher to inspire and influence people. It is OUR opportunity to lead by example and teach students to be civically engaged, to invite our friends and neighbors to join us in our FFA Alumni activities, to engage parents in the program, and to advocate to the community the benefits of agricultural education. By engaging others and preparing our students to be active contributors to society we not only impact individuals, we strengthen our own communities.

Fellow FFA Alumni, let’s take the initiative to be influential in the lives of the students we serve and the people with which we associate. You may not know the impact you make today, but as demonstrated by my father, 20 years down the road your willingness to give of yourself made a difference to one and was an asset to the community.

Amber Smyer, is the senior Program Manager for the National FFA Alumni Association. She started with the National FFA Organization in April of 2003. Amber is a former state FFA officer from Idaho, she is active in her community continuing to fulfill the FFA Motto, "Living to Serve" and just received her masters degree in 2011.

Fun Facts: Amber enjoys traveling the world, is a very talented seamstress, is a competitive board game player and loves her hometown Hornets in Declo, Idaho!

Why was ag education/FFA important to me?
What got me thrilled about agricultural education as a student was the hands on application of what you learned in the classroom and then applying it to my SAE project. The three circle model which consist of classroom, SAE and FFA at the time did not see the connection but it’s what made learning exciting and not just book work which lead me to a lifelong career in Agriculture Education.

Why is FFA Alumni important to Ag. Ed./FFA?
The FFA Alumni provides those extra arms and legs that an ag instructor needs to make sure the program is a well-rounded program for every student. There are only so many hours in the day so the local ag instructor main responsibility should be that of teaching and making sure each student has the ability to apply the three circle model.

What is the future of FFA Alumni?
To make sure that there is an active fully engaged Alumni affiliate supporting every FFA chapter so that every student can reach his/her potential and also provide the assistance to the local instructor.

Frank Saldana, started his career as an Ag Teacher in Texas, then came to National FFA Organization as the Student Leadership Specialist and finally took the reins of the National FFA Alumni Association as Executive Director in 2002.

Fun Facts: Frank is an outstanding chef, loves to scare people but scares easily and was the Mayor of Combes, Texas.

National FFA Alumni President's Visit to Housatonic Valley

Upon arrival at Bradley International Airport in Harford, CT at noon I was met by a long time friend George Wheeler. He is now retired after many years of teaching ag at Housatonic Valley High School and is currently a very active Life-time FFA Alumni member. George is also currently chair of the CT Ag Ed Advisory Council. We had a few hours before the Housatonic Valley FFA Alumni Banquet that evening, so George planned a great tour for me to two outstanding dairy farms on our way. The owners are former students and FFA members of George's and their children are current ag students at Housatonic Valley. Both farms were large "top of the line" dairy operations. One farm has even started a business of recycling its animal waste and making "Cow Pots" that are sold as organic containers for growing bedding plants. I was utterly (haha) amazed at the high level of knowledge of the farm owners and operators and the advanced technology used on the farms.

Next, it was on to visit the ag program at Housatonic Valley. Wow, what a facility. It was built recently with much community and FFA Alumni support. The "state of the art" facility houses the four teacher agri-science department that offers students a very comprehensive program. It was very evident this was truly a "community" agri-science facility.

Then it was on to a local community center for the FFA Alumni Banquet - again a beautiful new facility. Over 125 FFA and Alumni members, state and local officials, community leaders and family members attended. The delicious dinner was catered by a former FFA member and current Alumni leader who owns her own garden center and catering business. What a delicious meal. The evening program was packed with Alumni accomplishments, awards, officer elections, greetings from local and state FFA officers and, of course, remarks on behalf of the National FFA Alumni by "yours truly".

That night I was a guest of the Wheelers at their home not far from the banquet site in rural northwest CT.

The next morning they treated me to a delicious home cooked breakfast before taking me on a different route through beautiful CT on the one hour trip back to the airport for my return flight to MD. As the plane took off from Bradley and we flew over the tobacco production area located between Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA, I could not help but feel great about experiencing, even for a short 24 hours, the extrordinary support and work being done at the school and in the community by the Housatonic Valley FFA Alumni. This was truly FFA Alumni "at its best".

FFA Alumni member Kenneth K. Mitchell, age 88, long time Educational Consultant for Agricultural Education, State Advisor of the Tennessee Association FFA, and past Director of Secondary programs in Career and Technical Education died on May 18, 2011 at Horizon Medical Center in Dickson, TN.

Born Oct. 18, 1922, Mitchell, a resident of Dickson, TN, and formerly from Anderson County, was a former teacher of Vocational Agriculture at Dickson High School where FFA received many state and national awards under his leadership. He was a native of Loyston, TN (Union County), now covered by the back waters of Norris Dam, and a 1940 graduate of Norris High School where he began his teaching career as a part time teacher for World War II Veterans enrolled in the Institutional-on-the-Farm training. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 787th Military Police Battalion and Headquarters Company of the First Airborne Army, and came home with the 84th Infantry Division from the European Theater of Operation. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he received both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Education. He also did graduate work at Ohio State University and the University of Maryland.

During his tenure with the State Department of Education, the Agricultural Education and FFA programs in Tennessee were recognized at the national level for meeting the educational needs for students preparing for careers in agriculture as well as other areas in the world of work. He played a major role in the development of innovative programs in agricultural education especially in the area of Ag Science at the secondary level. The Leadership Development program for FFA members at Camp Clements which he helped design has been a highly successful program where thousands of students have developed leadership skills. In his retirement he served as Executive Director Emeritus of the Tennessee FFA Foundation, Inc.

Known for his “Sensational, Educational, Motivational, and Highly Inspirational” Thought for the Day, Mitchell has been a recipient of numerous awards during his years of service. Some of them include the Honorary State American Farmer Degree, National FFA VIP Award, FFA Lifetime Achievement Award, Outstanding State Supervisor of Agricultural Education – National Award, and The Torch Award presented by the General Conference of Methodist Men.

He has been an active member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including Tennessee Council on Career-Technical Education, Retired Teachers Association, Tennessee Farm Bureau, Dickson Rotary Club, Nashville Area Agricultural Club, Board of Directors for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Edith Robbins Mitchell; children, Kathryn Mitchell (Thomas) Jones of Franklin, TN; and Melanie Mitchell (David) Gunter of Athens, TN; grandchildren, David Mitchell (Nicole) Jones, and Eric Kendall Jones; and great-grandchild, Elijah William Jones, all of Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents Elijah Alonzo Mitchell and Leona Ayres Mitchell, brothers Rev. Edwin D. Mitchell of Knoxville, and Robert L. Mitchell of Nashville; brother-in-law Hubert Longmire of Powell; and sister-in-law Virginia Mitchell of Knoxville.

The family has asked that donations be made to the Tennessee FFA Foundation and earmarked for the Historical/Preservation Fund or the Mitchell Scholarship Fund.

FFA Alumni Racing their Way to the Top!

FFA Alumni are burning up the track! Kody Swanson and brother Tanner Swanson, former FFA members and American Degree Recipients from California FFA are making a huge splash in racing. The Swanson Brothers Swept "Thursday Night Thunder" at Lucas Oil Raceway, Thursday, May 12, 2011; Kody Wins with Tanner 2nd in Indianapolis Thriller!

Swanson Brothers and the USAC Pavement Sprint Cars at Lucas Oil Raceway for Night #1 of "Thursday Night Thunder." After finishing 2nd and scoring the most points in the season opener at Anderson Speedway in April, driver Kody Swanson led the series to the event and was among "those to watch" in the 30-lap Sprint car feature. Tanner Swanson was also mentioned prior to the event as a threat to win, as many remember the youngster stealing the show by winning last year's "Night Before the 500" in just his first attempt!

When the night's time trials came to a close, the results showed Kody then Tanner in the 3rd and 4th positions. With both brothers driving for their family owned TK Motorsports team, many knew that at least one of them should have a chance to end up in Victory Lane. Before that could happen, both drivers needed to finish in the Top 4 of their respective heat races to earn a spot in the night's feature event, and both did just that. Kody taking the Feature Win and Tanner in 2nd to complete the Swanson Brothers dominating One-Two finish! Watch the last exciting laps to see the come from behind win!

While it is very exciting to have TK Motorsports finish One-Two in the first race of the return of "Thursday Night Thunder," they will also go down in the record books as the first to win at the newly renamed Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis (formerly O'Reilly Raceway Park and Indianapolis Raceway Park)! After becoming the first brothers in history to "sweep" a USAC Silver Crown Feature One-Two in August of last year, the Swanson Brothers have now completed One-Two Feature Event sweeps in three other series. After Tanner and Kody each picked up wins in National Midgets and their first career Silver Crown victories last year, both were named USAC's "Most Improved Drivers" in 2010.

What is the Agricultural Career Network????

We’ve heard there are a number of questions among states about the ACN and wanted to provide clarification on a couple of things.

Question 1: What exactly IS the Agricultural Career Network (ACN)?
Answer 1: ACN is basically a website. FFA.org will remain the public website for FFA and anyone wanting to utilize ACN will be required to register and setup login and password information to access the site. The site is also personalized to whatever role you have within the organization. As an FFA Alumni member you’ll automatically have a record created in ACN. If we have your email on file, when the system launches Sept. 2011, you’ll receive an email inviting you to visit the site, create login and update your profile. If we don’t have your email attached to your membership record, your state and local FFA Alumni leaders will receive a notification directing you how to access ACN. Once you’ve accessed the site you’ll have information, news, and updates at your fingertips. You can update your information and subscriptions at any time and identify the ways you would like to engage with FFA and FFA Alumni. A full detailed overview of the ACN and benefits for using can be found on the Alumni Website.

Question 2: If a member doesn’t have an email, does that mean they can’t be an Alumni member when we move to the new online system?
Answer 2: No! We are collecting email addresses on our members so that they can take advantage of this opportunity to interact with FFA and FFA Alumni online. If a member doesn’t want an email address and isn’t interested in interfacing with us through our new online system, they can continue to pay dues to their local membership chair as they’ve always done. The membership clerk will handle the renewal and payment of those individuals as they manage the affiliate roster. Therefore, it is important for the local and state membership chairs to have email and access to a computer.

Question 3: Do I have to have email addresses for all my members?
Answer 3: When the new online system launches in September an email will automatically go out to all Alumni membership with email addresses asking them to visit the site, update their profile and see what the site has to offer. If you are unable to collect emails for members, as a local or state FFA Alumni leader you will receive notification on how to grant these individuals access to the web portal to manage their account.

Question 4: What if a member wants to interact with FFA/FFA Alumni through the new online system but doesn’t have an email?
Answer 4: FFA will be partnering with a free email vendor to provide email addresses to people who currently do not have one, but would like to obtain one if for no other reason to access and interact with FFA/FFA Alumni.

Question 5: How will the collection of dues be handled?
Answer 5: For the initial launch, it appears FFA will be unable to collect local or state Alumni dues through the Agricultural Career Network (ACN). Local Alumni leaders will be able to manage their roster through the ACN portal and will need to submit state and national dues to the state FFA Alumni association (if one exists) as they do today. The goal is to have the system calculate state and national dues and provide a dummy invoice to be printed and mailed to the state with dues. States will be able to pay national dues and other payments through the ACN portal. After the initial launch, FFA will be looking to expand payment options in Phase II of the project to increase efficiency of dues payment.

Question 6: How will administrative rights be granted to local and state Alumni leaders?
Answer 6: To ensure the privacy of our members, all member information within the new ACN system will not be available to everyone. Local and state FFA Alumni leaders will need to have the ability to view and edit the information for their affiliate and/or state and therefore will be granted administrative rights within the system for a full view of membership, payments, affiliate history, etc. We are asking each local and state FFA Alumni affiliate to identify 2-3 key contacts that work with their membership and dues payment to fulfill these administrative tasks. These individuals will need computer and Internet access and an email address. To register your local or state FFA alumni leaders to be granted administrative rights for your affiliate or state association visit the Alumni Website by May 15, 2011.

Making My New Year’s Resolution Come True: Starting or Growing Your FFA Alumni Affiliate

To create a charter for your school’s new FFA alumni affiliate group, all you need is 10 dues-paying members who agree on a constitution and bylaws. And if you’re unsure how to ever get to that point, FFA can help.

“The best way to start a program is to talk with someone who already has one,” says Bob Barton, an active alumnus in Hermiston, Ore. He also added that National FFA Alumni Association and each state organization can put teachers in touch with other teachers who are currently running successful Alumni affiliates. “FFA has information on their website to help you get started. And if you can find a few alumni and get together with them to help them understand their role and what you need as a teacher, it works well. The next thing is to get everyone active, keep everyone involved. Alumni shouldn't be extra work, but extra help to assist a teacher and chapter.”

Information on the FFA Alumni website includes a clear-cut action plan for starting an Alumni affiliate.
Here’s a sample of that plan:
1. Identify potential community members, parents and alumni. (Your affiliate members do not need to be former FFA members.) Have a start-up meeting with three to five of them.

2. Develop a tentative constitution and bylaws before the nucleus meeting. (Examples can be found on the Alumni website.)

3. Hold a nucleus meeting to:
a. Review the purpose and benefits of a local affiliate and how it helps local FFA members.
b. Discuss the procedure for chartering a local affiliate.
c. Review draft FFA Alumni bylaws, constitution and application for local charter.
d. Appoint a chairperson to assign duties.
e. Make a list of potential members and divide the responsibility of contacting each prospect.

4. Set and publicize an organizational meeting open to the public:
a. Announce the meeting date with a news release delivered to local media.
b. Have FFA members send handwritten invitations to parents, administrators and community leaders.
c. Contact potential members in person or by phone. Ask everyone to inform and invite five other people to the meeting.

5. Hold the organizational meeting.
a. Present the purpose of the meeting.
b. Use FFA Alumni promotional materials.
c. Arrange for an FFA Alumni member of the state or national council to help present the purpose and objectives of an Alumni affiliate.
d. Temporary chairperson asks for a motion to form an affiliate. With an affirmative vote, chairperson moves on to pass constitution and elect officers.
e. Establish local dues and set the next meeting.

Idaho FFA Alumni - "It Starts with You!"

FFA Alumni members from across the great state of Idaho took the 2011 Idaho State Leadership Conference theme of “It Starts with You” to heart last week as they gathered during the conference to reenergize the Idaho FFA Alumni Association. Originally formed in 1972, the state FFA Alumni association had fallen into inactivity for many years.
State FFA Advisor, Ben Meyer, recognizes the benefit of a state FFA Alumni association in providing support to local affiliates and contributing to Team Ag Ed and the state as a whole. Through Meyer’s support, Patrick Nauman, a former state FFA officer and business owner, pulled together a core group to reorganize the state FFA Alumni. Their efforts resulting in an organizational meeting conducted at the conference where eight individuals recognized that it did in fact start with each of them as they stepped forward and were elected into state leadership positions. A majority of the currently active local FFA Alumni affiliates also sent representatives to attend the meeting and an additional four or five schools sent community members to learn how to start their local affiliate! There are currently 16 formed or newly forming local FFA Alumni affiliates in Idaho and the new state leadership board is excited to grow that number.

Supply and Demand Study for Teachers of Ag Education

Agricultural Education in the United States is in a constant state of flux. Not only is the profession changing rapidly, but the patterns by which new teachers are educated and brought into the profession are undergoing dramatic revisions in most states. The number of elementary and secondary school teachers is projected to rise, primarily due to the increase in school enrollment” during the early part of the 21st century (Gerald, 1999). Secondary Ag Science Education Programs offer students the opportunity to apply the “general” education curriculum of science and mathematics and leadership skills through FFA. These opportunities for up and coming generations should not be forgone due to a lack of prepared educators. There are presently 7,487 FFA chapters which equates to 7,487 recognized agricultural education programs with more than 11,000 FFA Advisors and Teachers. It is clear that not all Agricultural Education programs have chartered FFA chapters. There continues to be a push to meet the great opportunities that are available to add new Agricultural Education Programs but this will be under difficult circumstances with today’s present situation. Unless things change there may not be enough qualified teachers to fill the roles necessary to provide for a new programs’ success. There continues to be a shortage of newly qualified agricultural teachers going into the profession, and there are Agriculture Education programs that were expected not to operate because a qualified candidate to teach (30 in 2009) could not be found. What does this mean? Now is the time for FFA Alumni to educate, advocate and act. We need to encourage more students to become ag educators but we also need to ensure that a program will be available for them when they graduate. To get yourself started do some homework on how to be an advocate, become familiar with the NAAE Legislative Action Center and listen to the National FFA Alumni Advocacy webinar. Get to know your school board and legislators. Know the retirement intentions and year of your current ag teacher and work with them to recruit a replacement. And don't be afraid to tell people why you believe in FFA!

Proceeds from the concert benefited the Northview FFA Scholarship Fund which provides scholarship funds for graduating FFA students.

Anita Schneider, National FFA Alumni Council member, How to Get Hooked for a Lifetime!

Anita Schneider, National FFA Alumni Council member, recalls why she is so passionate about FFA and will be an active member of the FFA Alumni for life.
It all started about 16 years ago when my two youngest sons decided that their FFA association needed an Alumni affiliate to help them out. My husband was not able to attend the reorganization meeting so they asked me to attend and help them. I did attend the meeting and by the end of the night they had volunteered me to serve on the local council to assist in getting it organized. My youngest son was the first WaKeeney student to attend WLC through the encouragement and assistance of the newly reorganized Alumni.
Well, that in short, is how I got started and I have not regretted it for one minute. It was their enthusiasm and quest for assistance that encouraged me more and it has been the love for this organization and ability to help so many other young people that has keeps me coming back. Being an advocate for agriculture and getting to know more about the organization and the youth has been very rewarding to me. After serving in numerous capacities for the local organization I decided to branch out and get more involved with the state level. To help even more young people to experience things they would not be able to without the alumni has been my quest.
After serving as a sponsor to the National FFA convention and seeing that awesome wave of blue jackets and experiencing the excitement, I felt a need to get involved on the national level. Trying to learn even more about the organization, becoming a part of this nationwide family and helping more FFA members has been one of my most rewarding experiences. If you believe in the future of agriculture and our youth; I strongly recommend that you become active in the FFA Alumni Association.

David Miller, National FFA Alumni President shares Why he is an FFA Alumni Member!

Joining the FFA Organization was a "no-brainer" for me. Having grown up with two brothers who were in our local high school FFA chapter, joining FFA at the time was expected of me. This was in the 1950" and early 60's, of course before the Alumni ever existed. As an Ag Education major in college and then an ag teacher, FFA was ingrained into my soul. I recall well the organizational meetings for a national FFA Alumni organization in Kansas City, MO during the National FFA Convention in the late 60's and early 70's.

Finally when the Alumni was formally organized in 1971, I jumped on the board as a charter member and soon after as a Life Member. Why? Again, a "no-brainer"! The organization that had been so good to me and helped me grow and develop as a youngster, now I wanted to support in every way possible to ensure current and future youth in agricultural education would have the tools for personal development that I had. During my youth and early years as a teacher and FFA advisor, I could see effects FFA was having on students who would engage in the program. His/her life would develop and blossom like a new tulip responding to the spring sunlight.

The growth and development of an individual in FFA is an amazing sight to see. Witnessing it personally year-after-year as an ag teacher, I felt it was my "duty" to pass these valuable personal growth and development organizational benefits on to every youth. What the FFA Organization does and can provide to youth merits our continuous and steadfast support, so we can continue to develop leaders in agriculture, our community, the nation and the world!

FFA Alumni presents $1,000 Collegiate American FFA Degree Scholarship

During the National FFA & FFA Alumni Convention all American Degree candidates were invited to join the National FFA Alumni and be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 college scholarship. Those who were already FFA Alumni members, simply had to indicate so and they too were entered into the drawing. On Friday at the American Degree Reception, each attendee was presented with an FFA Alumni cup and information on how to become engaged. National FFA Alumni President, Diane Amera brought remarks and congratulations on behalf of the Association and concluded her comments by drawing the winner of the scholarship from the few hundred entries. The recipient of the $1,000 collegiate American Degree scholarship was: Bryce Merchant of Vinton, Iowa.

Barton has assisted with organizing 13 different alumni affiliates and helped develop the Washington State FFA Alumni. He has received the FFA Distinguished Service, Honorary Chapter FFA Degree, Oregon State Honorary FFA Degree and County Fair Volunteer of the Year. He also serves as a Farm City Pro Rodeo Volunteer, Oregon Department of Education Perkins Policy Advisory Committee member and Oregon FFA Foundation Board Member. Barton's goals as president elect is to help create tools for state associations to be more successful at developing quality local affiliates, focus on the website content to better serve our members. Barton will serve as president elect for one year and then serve as president following David Miller's term.

McReynolds & Classen elected as Region Representative

Two FFA Alumni members were elected by alumni members in their respective region to serve as the regional representative on the National FFA Alumni Council. Shauna McReynolds of Oregon was elected as the Western Region Representative. McReynolds has been an active member of the North Clackamas FFA Alumni since 1998. During her tenure she has served as president, vice president, secretary and reporter. She has judged local, district and state CDE's, coordinated fundraising such as the Alumni Christmas Tree Sale, served as a delegate at district events, chaperones and coached the local chapter. She also currently serves as the Oregon FFA Council treasuer, a position she has held for 7 and a half years. This position gave her a chance to help organize the 2007 State Leaders Conference in Oregon. She also rallies for agricultural education on the state level and has organized the Oregon FFA Alumni Scholarship Committee for the past six years.

Dan Classen of Iowa was elected as the Central Region Representative. Classen is a life member of the FFA Alumni. He was elected as the local affiliate president seven years ago and still holds that office. He was elected to the Iowa FFA Alumni Board and is currently serving as past president. Although Dan did not experience FFA as a student, he has received the Honorary Iowa FFA State Degree and Honorary Chapter Degree.

Former NFA members receive FFA Alumni Lifetime Membership

The year 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the New Farmers of America (NFA). Four NFA members received lifetime membership into the National FFA Alumni Association during the alumni awards session. The newest lifetime members are Edsel Daniel of Moncure, NC; Dr. Daniel Godfrey of Pleasant Garden, N.C.; Walter Jones of Tarboro, N.C. and Marvin Rountree of Rocky Mount, N.C. (1957 NFA National President).

For 30 years, two organizations evolved and prospered. With similar goals, ideals and often coinciding paths, each group developed leaders who would become pioneers in their communities and in agriculture. One of these organizations is the National FFA Organization, today boasting more than 525,000 members. The other, the New Farmers of America (NFA), existed for African-American young men in a world where “separate but equal” was a way of life.

NFA was organized in Virginia in 1927 and became a national organization in 1935. The organization was originally formed to serve agriculture students in southern states where schools were segregated by law. Much like the FFA, NFA sought to provide young men with vocational, social and recreational activities in order to develop their skills in public speaking, leadership and agricultural trades.

In 1965, NFA and FFA merged and FFA added the talents of 52,000 NFA members to its roster.

Barnes, Beggs & Ericson receive National FFA Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award

The Outstanding Achievement Award is the National FFA Alumni Association's highest award presented to an individual. The award recognizes alumni members for outstanding service to agricultural education, FFA and FFA Alumni. This is a very prestigious award with no more than three awards presented annually. The 2010 recipients are John Barnes of Jasper, Ga.; Wallace Beggs of Clarksville, Ga.; and Karen Ericson of Riley, Kansas.

Dedication is something John Barnes is extremely familiar with. He spent his entire professional career of 42 years in the Gilmer County School System. He has served as advisor to the largest alumni affiliate in the state - Gilmer County FFA Alumni since its inception. He currently serves as teacher director on the Georgia FFA Alumni Council. He has served as president and director of the Georgia Agricultural Teachers Association, director & treasurer of the Georgia Retired Agricultural Teacher's Association. He has been awarded the Honorary American FFA Degree and the FFA Alumni Legion of Merit 11 times.

Following his retirement in 1991, Wallace Beggs became a volunteer for the Habersham Central FFA and FFA Alumni. He was inducted into the Habersham County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Beggs makes personal donations to assure that students will be able to attend state and national convention and attends the conventions as a chaperone. He currently serves as the North Region Member Director on the Georgia FFA Alumni Council. He has received the Georgia FFA Alumni Distinguished Contributor Award, Honorary American FFA Degree and was inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Karen Ericson is an invaluable asset to the Riley County FFA Alumni. Not only has she served as Riley County FFA Alumni president, vice president, and reporter, she assisted in the organization of another local affiliate. Ericson has served as Kansas FFA Alumni secretary for nine years. She volunteers her time locally as the greenhouse supervisor, plant science CDE coach, chaperone to national convention and coordinator of several fundraisers. On the state level Ericson has served as a state proficiency judge and state star farmer judge, as well as a member of the Kansas State Board of Education Horticulture and Exploratory Agriculture Curriculum Committee.

Twelve State Alumni Associations receive Star Awards

Twelve State FFA Alumni Association received Star Awards during the National FFA Alumni Convention Awards Session. The associations are recognized for having an increase of 70 or more members from the previous year. The One Star winner is West Virginia for having an increase of 70 to 79 members. The Three Star Winners with an increase of 100 plus members include: Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. The Three Star Winners also received a blue alumni blazer.

Membership awards presented to local affiliates and state associations

Quality members are what make a great organization. Affiliates across the nation have been working extremely hard to continue to recruit ambitious, supportive members. Each year the National FFA Alumni Association honors the growth in our membership by awarding the affiliate and state association with the most alumni members. The local affiliate with the most members for the 2009-2010 membership year is the Denmark FFA Alumni in Wisconsin, with over 545 members. The top two states in membership are Wisconsin with more than 8,000 members and Illinois with 4,570 members. Membership awards are also presented to those affiliates and states with the most lifetime members. The Denmark FFA Alumni wins this honor with 532 life members! The top two states are Wisconsin with 4,963 life members and Ohio with 2,626 life members.

Membership awards are also presented to states in the areas of Percent Membership Growth, Percent of FFA membership, and 100 percent State FFA Officer Life Membership. The winners include:

1st place - Louisiana with 90 percent

2nd place - Arkansas with 88 percent

3rd place - West Virginia with 37 percent

State Alumni Associations who provide life time memberships to their retiring state FFA officers are also awarded with a plaque. Those states include: Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Every year, National FFA Alumni hosts a membership rebate award program which awards states with a rebate check based on the number of annual members and lifetime members. Eleven states will receive membership rebates totaling $15,520.75. Those states include: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin.

Legion of Merit Awards presented

Active membership is the cornerstone to FFA Alumni affiliates across the U.S. Many members go above and beyond each year signing up new alumni members. The Legion of Merit awards those members who sign up 15 annual members or 5 life members annually. This year the National FFA Alumni awarded more than 55 Legion of Merit certificates to members.

There are four members who have received the Legion of Merit award for more than 15 years. Those individuals include Gary Lee (18 years), Joyce Sayre (26 years), Ken Seering (37 years) and William Teague (38 years).

If you have not participated in the Legion of Merit award program in the past then you will want to check it out for 2011. The National FFA Alumni Association has set a membership goal of growing by 11 percent nationwide for the 40th anniversary of FFA Alumni in 2011.

How to participate:

1. Join the FFA Alumni if you are not currently a member.

2. Recruit and sign up 15 new or renewing annual members or 5 life members.

3. Complete the Legion of Merit application and submit by May 15, 2011.

All applications received by the deadline will be entered in a drawing which will take place in July at the Alumni Development Conference. The drawing prizes include:

The awards session kicked off with motivational speaker, Derek Greenfield. He challenged FFA Alumni members to believe and achieve together! Alumni members were then recognized with awards for scrapbook, newsletter and website. The winners include:

The exhibit area provides an avenue for alumni members to visit with prospective and current members and provide them with updates on the FFA Alumni. Alumni Nation is a brand new area that hosts exhibiting companies who are specifically looking for connections with FFA Alumni members. The career show is open for a couple of more hours so if you have not made it over to Alumni Nation yet, then you better hurry up.

National FFA Alumni Convention kicks off

The National FFA Alumni kicked off in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Oct. 20. FFA Alumni from across the country have traveled to Indy to support FFA members in their local communities. Alumni members will have the opportunity to bid on items in the silent auction and live auction, play "Minute-to-Win-it" style games and dancing in the Fun Room and learn more about all the activities of the FFA Alumni. There will be an awards ceremony and business session during convention. The theme for this year's auction is "Lights, Camera, Auction! The benefit auctions help raise funds for student scholarships. So, be sure to check out the online auction to participate if you are not in Indy this year.

Convention Speaker is a Passionate Teacher

As a testament to his talents as an educator and dedication to students, Derek has been named six time to the list of Who's Who Among America's Teachers and received Faculty of the Year honors in his previous position at Shaw University. His innovative course, "Hip-Hop and American Society," has been featured twice in Source magazine. He also spent seven years as an award-winning youth worker in inner-city Chicago. He has published several academic papers and is he author of the widely acclaimed motivational book, The Answer is in Your Hands.

With his energetic style, innovative ideas, and sense of humor, Derek has become a highly requested speaker, addressing enthusiastic audiences from Texas to Tonga. His keynote presentations and workshops have been features at events such as the International Conference on Cultural Diversity, National Youth Professionals Institute, and southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference, including dozens of colleges and universities such as MIT, University of Texas, and Michigan State University. He also served as a motivation consultant for organizations such as McDonald's Corporation, Hilton Hotels, Progress Energy, United Airlines, and the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.

Derek received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Sociology from Northwestern University, and earned his Doctor of Education degree from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa. He is currently conducting research towards his Ph. D. in Cultural Studies at the University of Washington.

Alumni Development Conference 2010

Over 130 FFA Alumni Members from 28 states gathered in Rock Island, Illinois for the 2010 FFA Alumni Development Conference. From July 14 to July 17 members participated in motivational workshops, embarked on educational tours, and exchanged ideas with other members.

In workshops, participants assessed and then improved upon their personal leadership and learned learned about the technologies that will enable them to spread the Alumni Message to a board audience. Attendees also experienced a variety of tours including: John Deere Harvester Works, Patriot Renewable Fuels Plant, Wyffels Hybrids Facility, a Mississippi River Lock and Dam, and the Rock Island Arsenal.

Jessica Aquino, an attendee from Florida, writes, "I think Alumni members should attend at least once in their life. I got so much out of the sessions not only to take back to my affiliate but for me as a person and an educator. The tours were awesome... Can't wait for Little Rock next year!"

The conference theme of 'You Make It Happen' was not overlooked by participants. FFA Alumni members in attendance mad it happen by raising $7,150 to be used as Washington Leadership Conference Scholarships for FFA Members. That's 13 scholarships! A dessert auction, quilt raffle, and Taste of States voting all contributed to the total amount raised.

A special thank you goes to Tractor Supply Company and Farm Credit. Without their generous sponsorship of the 2010 Alumni Development Conference participants would not have had the opportunity to experience this amazing conference filled with learning and growth. Also, a thank you to the Illinois Planning Committee for the job well done planning and facilitating ADC.

Conference Focuses on Technology, Affiliate Involvement

Participants will visit many attractions in the area, including an ethanol plant, the Historic Arsenal Island and much more. Tours will give participants a glimpse of the agriculture, economics and landscape of the state, while featuring local FFA chapters. Workshops for the 2010 conference enforce the theme “You Make It Happen!” Two tracks will focus on how members can make the most of technology and of their affiliate at every stage. Participants will be asked to share their knowledge through networking and educational activities during social engagements, which will provide an environment for learning, friendship, relaxation and fun.

Affordable Registration, Expenses

With their registration, participants will receive conference supplies, local transportation, four nights/five days of hotel stay (double occupancy), and the majority of meals. Transportation to/from the conference site is the responsibility of the attendee. Each state association may send one official representative who pays a reduced fee; the balance is covered by a $200 ADC grant awarded by the National FFA Alumni Association. Additional Alumni members are encouraged to attend! Spouses and families are welcome to attend for a special fee, which includes lodging, tours, group meals and social activities.

FFA Alumni Convention Workshops
The National FFA Alumni will hold several workshops during the convention for alumni members. The workshops are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22 from 10:00 until 2:30 p.m. The first workshop on social media kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and is led by Kimberly Henderson and Joy Carter of the National FFA Alumni Council. Diane Amera, president-elect of the National FFA Alumni, will lead the second workshop on driving membership for the alumni. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., the third workshop for Thursday, led by Phyllis McDonald will provide information on membership, awards and applications.
Following the alumni business session on Friday, Oct. 23, Dale Beaty and Ronnie Ansley, past presidents of the National FFA Alumni Council, will lead a workshop for those interested in one day serving on the National FFA Alumni Council.
FFA students are encouraged to attend the “Go Blue” workshop at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 in ICC Wabash Room 3. This workshop will be led by past National FFA Officers Jamie Cecil and Brady Revels.

Blue and Gold Jackets swarm Indy
A sea of blue and gold jackets will begin to swarm Indianapolis, Indiana this week for the 82nd National FFA Convention. Alumni members will also be in Indy to help support the FFA. The theme for the 2009 National FFA Alumni Convention encourages members to “Say It, Do It, Live It!” for agricultural education. The FFA Alumni has a full schedule of events planned including workshops on social media and membership; hypnotist shows; benefit auctions, and the awards and business session. The keynote speaker for the alumni sessions is Bob Ash, owner of Life Lessons. He has provided training and education to more than 1,200 organizations and businesses, numbering more than 320,000 people. All convention attendees are encouraged to visit the FFA Alumni Fun in Ag Ed Room for games, information and much more. The room will be open Wednesday through Friday and located in the Indiana Convention Center 500 Reception Room. Help Grow Your Soup – Vote for the Next Five Barns!
Campbell Soup Company launched the Help Grow Your Soup campaign last year by establishing a partnership with FFA to give back to the farming community. The partnership helps to revive barns across America. Five barns were revied in 2009 in Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, Oregon and New York. All the barns received a facelift with the Campbell’s famous red paint, white trim, new fixtures and other features. They are now shining examples of how FFA and FFA Alumni members continue to “live to serve.” Each of the orginial five barns can be seen on the HelpGrowYourSoup.com web site. Now this fall, FFA supporters and consumers can become involved with the partnership by voting for their favorite barn in the next phase of the partnership. Ten barns are in need of preservation and individuals can learn more about each barn and vote for their favorite barn online at HelpGrowYourSoup.com. For each vote on the site, Campbells will donate $1 to FFA, up to $250,000, on the consumer’s behalf for agricultural education. The five barns that receive the most votes will be awarded participation in this year’s Help Grow Your Soup Barn Reviving Program. Once the five winning barns are announced, FFA members, FFA Alumni and local community leaders will work together to revive the selected barns.

Support Needed for the National FFA Commemorative Coin Act

The National FFA Commemorative Act (U.S. Senate Bill #1553 and the U.S. House of Representatives Bill #3464) will seek a U.S. minted commemorative coin honoring the 85th anniversary of the National FFA Organization in 2012. The FFA is working with key leaders in Congress to promote and gain co-sponsors of the bill. FFA Alumni members are encouraged to contact their congressional leaders urging them to co-sponsor the bill. One avenue for alumni members to use for contacting their congressional leaders is via the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) Legislative Action Center web site. The National FFA Alumni is a key sponsor of the Legislative Action Center web site. When visiting the web site, click on “Issues and Legislation” and then select the National FFA Commemorative Coin Act. So, be sure to check out the web site for additional details and contact your congressman today.

2009 SLC Participants
The 2009 State Leaders Conference has concluded! The conference was a great opportunity for participants to meet and interact with Alumni members from 28 states. Affiliate activities and ideas flowed throughout the week as participants shared with one another the challenges and triumphs in each of their states. Participants were engaged in a variety of workshops related to advocacy, affiliate development, corporate partnership, and membership development. They also found time to enjoy breath taking views of the Colorado landscape during local tours. Highlights included tours of the High Wire Bison and Elk Ranch, Grand Mesa Alpaca Farms, Orchard Valley Farms and Market, and a Switzerland of America Jeep tour. Hats for WLC Scholarships

During the 2009 SLC in Colorado, FFA Alumni members helped raise money for WLC scholarships by decorating various hats and selling those at the auction on the last night. The auction and other donations helped raise $8,250 for WLC Scholarships. Scholarships were presented to the local FFA Chapters in Colorado that assisted hosting this year’s SLC. Additional scholarships were presented by a drawing where all states attending had an opportunity to win. The recipients winning the WLC scholarships were:
